Breaks!

The Guinness World Record rules specify that we earn 5 minutes of break time for each hour of continuous movement (that means, if we stop after

  • 1 hour and 30 minutes
we only gain 5 minutes of break time
  • 1 Hour/2 Hours exactly
    We maximize our break time
  • 59 minutes
we don’t gain any break time

so we need to schedule our breaks very carefully to make sure we gain enough break time!)

We don’t want to use up all our break time – if we do need an unplanned break (because, say, the speaker system failed), we want to be able to stop for a few minutes without jeopardizing the World Record because we used 3 minutes when we only had 1 minute of break time left.

Therefore, we will only have 4-minute breaks after each hour – and bank one minute of break time per hour.

4-minute breaks are great to

  • grab some water
  • have a quick snack
  • stretch quickly
  • dry off

but they can be challenging if you also want to

  • change clothes/Shoes
  • use the restroom
  • deal with blisters
  • stretch properly

So we will also have dance segments of 2 hours at a time, followed by 8-minute-breaks, aiming for a series of

  • 1 hour of Zumba
  • 4-minute-break
  • 1 hour of Zumba
  • 4-Minute-break
  • 2 hours of Zumba
  • 8-minute-break

We’ve found that, from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m., 2-hour dance segments can be really challenging, and we’re planning to use some banked break time to switch to a 1-hour-Zumba, 6-minute-break schedule for these most challenging hours.

Break songs

During each break, we will play break songs to indicate how much time is left. For the last minute of each break, we will be playing the last minute of “Bang, Bang” – this will be your signal to return to your dance spot in time for the dancing to continue!

Using your break time well

Four minutes pass by incredibly quickly and we have occasionally run out of time for the things we had planned to do. The best way to avoid running out of break time is to

  • Know what you want to do when the break starts
  • Know what you want to eat when the break starts
  • Try to combine activities where possible (eat while you stretch)
  • Take the most important things first

Using your break time well becomes much easier over time, that’s why we will include breaks in our training – by the time of the World Record attempt, everyone will know what to do!
